The Read

The read (on Thursday 30 Jul's close): the H1 BANK SEASON IS DELIVERING RECORDS ACROSS THE BOARD — and the ATHEX has printed a 17-YEAR HIGH (2,571.90, +1.25%), the banking index +1.78%. The demand-side proof is now IN: Eurobank reported adj. net profit €776m (H1), core operating profit €952m (+10%), RoTBV 16.6% and RAISED FY RoTBV guidance to ~17%; NBG PAT €661m, EPS €1.45 (+3%), RoTE 15.5%, NII €1,096m — both BEAT and both raised guidance (Eurobank the stronger). That follows Piraeus's record €617m + the €2.0bn NII upgrade (Tue), and Alpha reports TODAY (31 Jul) to close the cluster. The market is rewarding it — a 17-year high — proving the NII-durability / re-rating thesis even against the global cross-currents. Those cross-currents turned FRIENDLIER: the US rebounded hard 30 Jul (S&P +1.66% on MSFT's AI blowout — the AI-capex verdict came back positive), and Iran is DE-ESCALATING (a ceasefire proposed, the first tankers moving, Brent falling to ~$87) — the risk-off overhang of the FOMC/Iran is easing. The remaining watch is the hawkish Fed (a HELD-but-9-3 hawkish hold, cuts off the table) + sticky US inflation. Politics stays commanding for ND (Marc >30%, +14pt lead). See the monitor overleaf.

Synthesis

The strategic read — Athens holds above 2,500 on a bank-led advance, but a hostile global tape (hawkish FOMC + a semis rout) now caps the high-beta upside into H1 results.
(i) The H1 catalyst has ARRIVED — Piraeus opens with a RECORD (29 Jul). After a quietly firm 28 Jul close (+0.13% to ~2,521, Alpha +2.56% the bank leader), the demand-side proof landed TODAY: Piraeus H1 net profit €617m, Q2 €336m (+22%), RoTBV 16%, EPS €0.47, total capital 18.6%, and the FY NII target UPGRADED to €2.0bn — a clean beat that validates the NII-durability / re-rating thesis. Eurobank + NBG follow 30 Jul, Alpha 31 Jul. This is the medium-term anchor against a near-term hostile tape (the FOMC today + the re-armed Iran risk).
(ii) The oil trade has INVERTED — refiners now the give-back. As the war premium unwinds (Brent ~$88, the strike pause holding), the refiners are the give-back trade: Motor Oil -1.23% off its record on 27 Jul, HELLENiQ +0.48% steady — while the rate-sensitive banks LED (Alpha +3.83%, NBG +2.17%) as the oil-inflation fear eased. The mirror of last week: the banks are the beneficiary of the easing inflation impulse, the oil-beta names the funding source. The re-rating is intact but now meets a hostile global tape (a hawkish Fed + a semis rout).
(iii) Aktor's €650m SCI PRICED — orderly, on deep demand. The year's largest ATHEX raise priced at €11.25 (the range cut from a €13.52 ceiling to €11.25-12); the listed share fell 14% (13.02 -> 11.72) converging on the clearing price — an ORDERLY ex-rights dilution, NOT distress: demand ran 3.5-4x / €2.3bn (Blackstone, BlackRock, Mystakidis, Melissanidis), €650m raised (no upsize), 57.78m new shares list 28 Jul, a €300m bond leg alongside (€1bn for the ~€3bn 2026-31 plan). The size cleared to top-tier foreign institutions — the deepening-capital-market thesis, at a cyclical price.
Net (Delphic view): the medium-term re-rating is now PROVEN, not just priced — Piraeus's record H1 + the €2.0bn NII upgrade is the demand-side evidence under the bank thesis, and Athens holds above 2,500. The swing is near-term and EXTERNAL: the FOMC decision today (a hold base case, a hike minority live) and the re-armed Iran risk (the strike pause fractured, oil firming) are a risk-off overhang for the high-beta names — but the Greek banks now trade their own numbers, and those numbers are records. Watch the 30-31 Jul prints (Eurobank/NBG/Alpha) confirm the read.
(iv) Politics — both threads still cut the government's way. Mitsotakis will roll the ND pre-election programme at the September ΔΕΘ (aimed at spring 2027) with a >€2bn TIF package; the EPPO OPEKEPE probe stays BOUNDED (22 suspects incl. 4 sitting ND MPs charged 16 Jul; no new procedural vote, no cabinet/PM reach). The newest poll — Interview (21 Jul, raw) ND 26.8 / ELAS 15.8 / PASOK 10.1, ND +11 — keeps ND in the high-20s cluster; base case an ND-LED government.
